Niv-Mizzet, alternately known by his titles of “the Firemind” and “dracogenius,” is the oldest-known living dragon on Ravnica, and is both the parun and current guildmaster of the Izzet League. He is an undisputed genius, his legendary intelligence and keen understanding of metamagic – the process of how magic works – making him a paragon of intellect in the city. It was Niv-Mizzet who initially concocted many of the wondrous devices that make Ravnica the city it is today, including the creation of the nigh-indestructible but fluid alloy known as mizzium. Many mages in the League strive to impress Niv-Mizzet with their discoveries and inventions, hoping that they will be allowed to have an extrasensory link with the guildmaster’s though process; to be connected with the Firemind is to be bathed in the dragon’s mental brilliance and passion.
Almost as legendary as the dragon’s brilliance is his ego. Niv-Mizzet is vain to the extreme, his narcissism expressed by nearly every aspect of his guild, from the name of the League to the matching red-and-blue colors of the Izzet magewright uniform. The capricious dragon had most of Ravnica’s other wyrms hunted to extinction eons ago, so that none may challenge his authority; those dragons that remain are either renegade lesser dragons or inferior clones of Niv-Mizzet, who the Firemind created as a further testament to his greatness. Niv-Mizzet has even claimed that he could conquer Ravnica easily “if he felt like it,” yet remains content to simply brood over his experiments and the operations of his guild.
Reclusive, fickle and seemingly eternally jaded, Niv-Mizzet has only recently returned to run the Izzet League after abandoning his guild during the Dissension Crisis. When the nephilim were laying waste to the city, Niv-Mizzet was one of the beings who rose to fight them, proving his combat prowess by felling two of them himself. He did not get out of the fight unharmed, and after being wounded Niv-Mizzet flew northward, claiming he was “bored.” His disappearance was a major blow to the League, and even those tapped into the Firemind could no longer commune with him. His return brought much relief to the Izzet, and much todo was made when Niv-Mizzet announced it was time for “a new grand project.” Now lurking in his aerie of Nivix, the dragon turns unfathomable ideas in his head, while the Izzet see to whatever tasks the Firemind prepares for them.
